Every time your dryer runs, it pushes hot, moist air through a vent duct to the outside of your house. That air carries fine lint particles that pass through the lint trap. Over months and years, that lint accumulates on the interior walls of the vent duct, building up layer by layer until it restricts airflow. Once airflow drops, the dryer works harder, runs hotter, and takes longer to dry clothes. Eventually the buildup gets thick enough to become a fire hazard.

The vent duct itself is the problem area most homeowners never see. A dryer that runs hot to the touch on top or that shuts off mid-cycle from overheating is a more urgent signal. The thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat is tripping because heat can’t escape through the vent. If this happens repeatedly, the vent needs cleaning before you replace the fuse again.
